Weekly Poll Result 9 - All On The Same Page

Law is an effective and important way to control the security of a country but some times in the cyber law, things might get out of control sometimes. So in last week’s poll question, we wanted to know the readers’ opinion on whether do they feel some of the Internet Meme out there are violating certain people’s privacy. The result is not surprising as all of the respondents agreed that some Internet Memes are violating some people’s privacy.

In the some of the past posts that we have written, there are a few Internet Memes that violates people’s privacy. One of them is Internet users take pictures of “victims” and post it on the Internet without their consent. Even though these “victims” may eventually get the benefit from it such as becoming famous or getting a job opportunity, it is still violating their privacy.

Can you imagine that one day, your friend takes an ugly picture of you and post it on the Internet? And even though you might become famous in some way because of that but would you feel embarrassed especially when you see some other Internet users posting negative comments about the picture? If you do take note of the posts that we have posted, you will probably notice that the “Little Fatty” Internet Meme is an example of this violating privacy issue.

So based on the explanation above, we can see that why all of the respondents are on the same page as they agree that some of the Internet Meme out there are violating some people’s privacy just like the “Little Fatty” Internet Meme. In our opinion, maybe this issue is way too big for the officials or the “victim” to handle. Do you think this issue is not something serious, therefore should be ignored? Or you think that this should not be happening? If so, how do you think people can stop this? Share your opinion with us by dropping a comment in this post.

Don't Give Me That Look

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/dontgivemethatlook

We all love cute animals as an Internet Meme. The cuter it is, the more exposure it will get. The word cute is quite over-rating for this Internet Meme that was founded in year 2007. Known as the "Dramatic Look", it features a prairie dog from a Japanese television show named, "Hello! Morning". The prairie dog was carried out to meet the audience and host of the show and it was immediately "awe-ed" by the viewers. As the camera kept rolling and had a close-up shot of the animal, it gave a very serious look to the camera. The TV show was aired on Japan's local channel and that was how the Prairie Dog Dramatic Look came about.

magnum9er, How the Dramatic Prairie Dog was Born, [Online] Retrieved on 17th March 2010.
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sochd9Xqlos

There is nothing too outstanding or great about it. But that "look" from the prairie dog caught the attention of one of the viewers. It started with just a simple editing by cutting out the Japanese girls and host and leaves only the prairie dog so-called dramatic look. That particular part of the prairie dog's look slowly burst into fame as more and more people edited the 5 second clip. Today, the original prairie dog clip has over 19 million views making it one of the most viewed video of all time.

It was also featured in some websites like I am bored, BoingBoing, and Comedy Central Insider. Some people even remade the clip into a longer version of clip, a funny static image with caption on it, a animated GIF version, and even using other animals with the same "look".

What is quite unbelievable is the kind of status it gained from such a small feature in a Japanese TV show. The prairie dog even got a slot in one of the Super Bowl commercial. Super Bowl is like the World Cup except it is American Football. It is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL) and all the great American Football teams battle it out to win the Vince Lmbardi Trophy. So, this event is not quite but very big in America. The Super Bowl commercial is one of the anticipated parts of the whole event.

Therefore, the prairie dog actually made a very good name for itself through a 5 second feature in a TV show. Do you think it was a camera trick or was it pure expression from the animal? Let us know what you think.

The Gentleman

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/thegentleman

Internet Meme usually comes in the form of pictures and videos and it attracts thousands and perhaps even millions of viewers. We rarely see Internet Meme in different form. However, there are probably one or two Internet Meme animation out there and in this post, we are going to introduce an Internet Meme animation. What is it about? Well, this Internet Meme is called "Amazing Horse" and it is a song in animation. Based on the research that we have done, the song is about how women rights have improved as the use of horses for transport has declined. Can you understand it? It you do not, we do not blame you as we had a hard time trying to see the connection.

Amazing Horse otherwise known as Get On My Horse is a viral flash animation of a gentleman on a horse along with a woman singing and dancing with a catchy but odd lyric. You will probably understand this after viewing the video below as well as the lyric. This viral flash animation became an Internet phenomenon after it was uploaded on weebls-stuff.com in September 2009.

Lyric:
Look at my horse
My horse is amazing
Give it a lick,
"Ooo, it tastes just like raisins!"

Have a stroke of its mane
It turns into a plane,
And then it turns back again
When you tug on its winkie!

"Ooo, that's dirty!"
Do you think so?
Well, I better not show you
Where is the lemonade is made!
Sweet lemonade
mmmm, sweet lemonade
Sweet lemonade
Yeah, sweet lemonade

Get on my horse,
I'll take you around the universe
And all the other places too!

I think you'll find
that the universe, pretty much
covers everything!

Shut up woman, get on my horse!
ainudil, Captain Blubber, Chris Menning & Brad Kim, Amazing Horse, Know Your Meme [Online] Retrieved on 14th March 2010.
URL: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/amazing-horse

Strangely enough, this animation provided inspiration and a stepping stone to others to create their own version which includes remixes as well. Just like how people will make parodies of Internet Meme, there are some who turned this song into an acoustic version of their own and you can view one of them by clicking here.

Apart from that, some or most of the Internet users out there like to use the last line of the song - "Shut up woman, get on my horse!" while communicating. It does sound rude when you say it but when you think from the funny side of it and try saying like how those actors or actresses always say it in sitcoms, then you would probably find it funny.

This Internet Meme received many positive feedbacks from the Internet users till there are some even draw them on their body parts. And when a video on Youtube become popular, you will usually see other users busy uploading the same video non-stop and this Internet Meme is no different either. Among the many videos out there, the highest viewed video is "Amazing Horse - Weebl's Stuff [HD]" by krunk0r which has over 3 million viewers!

From our perspective, we find this Internet Meme to be rather interesting especially when you are watching the video for the first few times and the song has a catchy rhythm too. You might even like how the gentleman sings as the song goes on. But if you continue to watch like we did, you will most probably find it annoying mainly because the song keeps on repeating itself. Despite that, the animation is pretty though. And by the way, we do not see the connection of how this is related to women rights and it is more like promoting lemonade juice.

So, what do you think about this Internet Meme? Do you like the song? Do you like the animation? Or do you hate them? Share your opinion with us as we would like to hear from you.

The Criminal Act on Toby

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/savetoby

Can you imagine there are immoral people in the cyber world as in trying to get the public compassion by using an animal to earn money? Maybe not but it happened and the worse thing is that it became an Internet Meme called “Save Toby”. This Internet Meme began five years ago in 2005, when a guy named James Mceahly found an injured rabbit outside of his home. We wonder how did the rabbit got there.

Anyway, James brought the rabbit home and names it Toby. He took care of it and nursed Toby till he is fully recovered. Some of you maybe wondering, how is this called immoral? Well, continue reading before forming any conclusion.

Toby
Savetoby.com | Only YOU have the power to Save Toby! [Online] Retrieved on 11th March 2010.
URL: http://www.savetoby.com/#

While the rabbit is getting back to hundred percent in terms of his health, James setup a website and calls it “Save Toby | Only YOU have the power to Save Toby” at savetoby.com. He then tell the readers how he took care of Toby and how much he had spent on the rabbit. So, he wants to claim back the money spent from the readers that visited the website. How? James said that if at the end of the day, he do not receive US$50 000 of donation to the website, he will kill Toby and have him as a meal for himself! At this point, some of you may feel like killing James instead.

Pathetically, that message caught the attention of some readers as well as their sympathy towards Toby. They started to get nervous and ask their acquaintances to donate the money to save Toby. However, the website only received up to US$28 000 of donation at the end of the day but according to James, he is satisfied with the figure and Toby’s life was spared.

Slowly, more and more people started to follow James’s act and ask for donation on their own website such as Save Bernd and Save Fluffy. Having said all of this, Urban legend website snopes.com indicates that the website is a hoax. Some claimed that the amount gained in the website was just an imitation.

Despite people saying it is a hoax, we think that James’s act towards Toby is highly unnecessary and somewhat unforgivable because he is trying to toy with Toby’s life to gain money and can even think of such act. So, do you agree with what we said about James’s act or do you think James has done nothing wrong at all? Share your thoughts with us by commenting on this post.

Yo dawg!

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/yodawg

We all know this guy from the hit MTV show, Pimp My Ride. He goes by the name Xzibit and he is the low-rise pants, big "bling", hip hop rapper host that everyone would love to have appear in front of their door step. Pimp My Ride is a reality program that helps makeover or rather "pimp" up a trashy-looking car into a one-of-a-kind vehicle. If you actually watched the show, you would know that he would criticize the car before ringing the doorbell to the person's house.

Why is Xzibit, the rapper, has to do with this week's post? That is because he is one of this week's Internet Meme.

Xzibit and together with a whole crew of automates from L.A.'s West Coast Customs, will come up with the most out-of-this-world design and gadgets in the car. A pool table, a fishtank, a bar, and a built-in Jacuzzi are just some of the few gadgets that may be installed inside the new "pimp" car. The whole West Coast Custom crew always come up with some really crazy but brilliant ideas to pimp up an old junk car.

What many people may not notice is that Xzibit have his own language and style of speaking. His famous phrase is "Yo dawg" or "Sup dawg". In simple English, it means "Hello" and "How are you?". But one of the most famous catch phrase and the only reason why we are writing this post is something like this,

"Yo dawg, we heard you liked ___ so we put a ___ in your ___ so you can ___ while you ___."

Photobucket
Xzibit Yo Dawg, Know Your Meme [Image Online] Retrieved on 13th March 2010.
URL: http://knowyourmeme.com/i/177/original/800px-Sup_dawg.jpg

For example, in a proper sentence, "Yo dawg, we heard you liked bikes so we put a bike on your bike so you can ride while you ride."

URL: http://mashable.com/2009/03/04/funny-memes/

The sentence vary in many ways. Most of the time, the sentence does not make much sense but because of that and also his rapper style, it caught the attention of many. It spreads like a virus when people started to talk like that online and using images from the web and putting the catch phrase on it.

Even the man himself was shock by such phenomenon. He even tweeted on his Twitter account about it. He posted on Twitter several times. The first time his Tweet sounded angry and it describes his belittle of the whole frenzy.

Photobucket
Print screen from : http://twitter.com/mrxtothaz/status/1260527355

But in his second he redraw his bitterness and said, "I'm not mad @ you". Even Xzibit himself needed time to adjust to such phenomenon and was surprise with the kind of response.

Photobucket
Print screen from : http://twitter.com/mrxtothaz/status/1265979909

This phenomenon started in 2007 and till today, there are still people trying to keep this phenomenon alive by displaying more images with the same catch phrase. There are tons of those images online and there is even a website solely for the "Yo dawg" phenomenon (http://yoyodawgdawg.com/). Half of it doesn't even make sense but what do you personally think of this phenomenon? Do you think Xzibit was over-reacting on Twitter? Leave us a comment to tell us what you think.

Weekly Poll Result 8 - Entertainment Gained

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/weeklypoll8

Photobucket

When a person views news, blog posts, videos or any other similar content on the Internet, they usually gain something from it regardless whether it is purely just for entertainment or interests or nothing. And that is what we are trying to find out from this poll as we asked what you can possibly get by viewing Internet Meme last week. The results have been collected and analyzed. We can say that there are no major shocks in the results.

"Entertainment" came out on top as fifty eight percent of the respondents voted for it. From this, we can say that most of the Internet users out there feel that they gain entertainment by viewing Internet Meme. The reason being that is they are interested in it and as mentioned in the previous posts, it can provide everyone with laughter and as a result, making everyone happy.

Even some of the lamest Internet Meme can be funny to some extent because there are people who can see the funny side of things even though the Internet Meme might not be funny to others, generally. Viewing Internet Meme can sometimes also be considered as a way of killing boredom as some people like to search for random stuff on the Internet.

Next is "Humor" where it obtained thirty four percent of the respondents' votes. Internet users who often view Internet Meme could well end up as jokers as they could be learning and gaining the humor and tricks of Internet Meme. They then might even starts to practice what they have gained from it by playing a prank to one of their acquaintances.

Apart from that, these users who viewed Internet Meme and gained the humor and tricks can use them when they communicate with their friends or family to make the conversation atmosphere to be more lively, assuming if the mood is rather flat and boring. And indirectly, they are spreading the existence of the particular Internet Meme.

The remaining eight percent of the respondents voted for "Knowledge". This reflects that the Internet users view Internet Meme to read and study it without any evil intentions. And what we meant here by study is not like students going to school or college to study about Geography or Marketing but rather just taking note of it like a side knowledge. Users could react "Mmm, interesting..." when they view Internet Meme. They might even bookmark the particular web page but not writing it down like taking lecture notes.

Lastly, none of the respondents felt they gained nothing by viewing Internet Meme. In other words, users feel that they are able to gain something by viewing Internet Meme regardless of whether it is significant or not. So, do you agree with the results? Do you think that viewing Internet Meme gives you nothing? Share your thoughts with us as we would like to hear from you.

Something Different

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/something-different

In the world of Internet Meme, there are not many that are prominent as well as memorable for Internet users. Some that stands out are of course like the Lolcats but this time, we are going to look at something slightly different but still catch peoples’ attention. “Little Fatty” is an Internet Meme that was “born” eight years ago in 2002. What is Little Fatty? It is actually a boy named Qian Zhijun from China and he was only sixteen years old when this Internet Meme became popular.

Photobucket
Chris Menning & Brad Kim, Little Fatty, Know Your Meme [Online] Retrieved on 5th March 2010.
URL: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/little-fatty

And surprisingly, the mastermind behind Qian’s rise is one of his teachers because this teacher was the one who posted up one of Qian’s funny looking face expression picture on the Internet and it became famous. At the start of it, most of the Asians know this person and start to edit his pictures on different characters and movie poster by using Photoshop because of his funny looking expression. As a result of this, he gained the name “Little Fatty” or as Xiao Ping throughout China.

Then in early 2003, this particular “virus” as we would call it reached the Western Country and majority of them were attracted by Qian’s funny expression and started to pay attention to him. “Little Fatty” became so well known till the Times Online calling him “One of the most famous faces in China.”. On the other hand, the Reuters proclaimed “Little Fatty Rules Chinese Web” and other publications praise Qian the same way.

Because of his popularity, he got the chance to host a cooking show for China FoodTV. Qian then went one even further as he took on a role in the movie; Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon which also features Maggie Q and Andy Lau. We are pretty sure that most of you would have heard of this movie before, right? He also used his gained fame to become a spokesperson for awareness of Chinese obesity.

Photobucket
Chris Menning & Brad Kim, Little Fatty, Know Your Meme [Online] Retrieved on 5th March 2010.
URL: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/little-fatty

To think one became famous just through expression is just somewhat baffling. But of course, Qian would not have gained the fame if he does not have any talent in communicating and acting and we guess he owes his teacher a huge massive gratitude for this, don’t you think? And from our point of view, we do think some of the pictures shown above are funny especially with his face replacing Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Carribean poster and Mona Lisa in the painting.

What do you think of this “Little Fatty” Internet Meme and Qian as a person? Did you watch the Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon movie? Share with us your opinion about Qian and maybe his acting in the movie, if you know anything about it.

Weekly Poll Result 7 - Yes or No?

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/weeklypoll7

Photobucket

This week's poll finds out from our voters whether they have ever used an Internet Meme. From the previous weekly poll result, as a common reason of the existence of Internet Meme, majority view Internet Meme to have a laugh but have they ever used it for their own purpose instead of just viewing it? Surprisingly, yes. Majority of the votes said that they have not used an Internet Meme.

This result shows that many people used Internet Meme for their own personal experience only. They do not share the meme with their friends. Funnily enough, Internet Meme come about because people spread the meme around to their friends and other Internet users. However, this week's result differs.

Taking the tie is "I think so". With 40% of the votes, the voters have utterly no idea whether they have used an Internet Meme before or rather, they have forgotten. This shows that, although there are tons of Internet Memes out there and people are continuing spreading it through the internet, there are people who do not know what the term Internet Meme is.

These people may know for a fact what is LOLCats or Dancing Baby but they do not know that these so-called "phenomenon" is categorized as Internet Meme. It is hard to blame them because people who spread a meme do not tell that it is called an Internet Meme but rather the main purpose is to just spread the meme.

Only a mere 20% of people used Internet Meme. Partly, the voters may be inexperience with the term Internet Meme, therefore, such result is shown. Just like all the memes mention, all Internet Memes are spread through e-mails, social networking sites, chat rooms and so on. It is spread vastly until it becomes known to everyone. And once it is widely known, that Internet Meme can we safely called as a phenomenon.

So Everything Meme readers, have you or have you not used an Internet Meme before?

Weekly Poll Result 6 - Equal Reasons

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/weeklypoll6

Weekly Poll Chart 6

In this poll, we want to find what is the main reason most of you out there view Internet Meme. There are a lot of reasons for one to do this. It can range from one finding for entertainment to someone who got bored and just randomly surfing the Internet and look for it. But in the poll result that we have analyzed, the votes for the reasons are rather equal.

There are two reasons sharing the highest number of votes which is “To have a laugh” and “Others” at twenty nine percent. Many people these days like to surf the Internet to search for pictures, jokes or even videos and have a laugh. And Internet Meme is no different either as some of it out there can make people laugh and create entertainment in the process. Perhaps a good example of this will be the Lady Gaga’s Poker Face Chinese New Year version that we mentioned in the previous post.

On the other hand, respondents who voted for the “Others” option could be because they can or want to communicate with others about Internet Meme. Many of them may like to socialize with other Internet users through Internet Meme. With many Internet Meme out there, many Internet users are bound to comment on those memes and at the same time, the users can communicate with one another. We guess this is another way of making friends.

And funnily enough, three of the four remaining reasons that were given received the same number of votes with each obtaining fourteen percent. The first of the three is Internet users want to see what the latest or current Internet Meme is. Most of us like to keep ourselves updated and even though Internet Meme may not be in the same category as political news or anything like that, people will still like to know about the latest things so that they enjoy them while it is still popular. Nobody likes to leave themselves in the dust.

People say curiosity kills the cat and maybe that applies in this case as well. Being curious is nothing wrong but when someone is, they will begin to search for more information about the particular topic and in this case, Internet Meme. He or she may have heard or seen an Internet Meme somewhere and they may begin to wonder “Hmm, what is that?”. In other words, they get curious. So, they will start to find more and more things about Internet Meme.

The third reason that also received fourteen percent is “Got bored”. This could easily happen when the person has nothing to do at home or even at work after all the tasks has been completed. So, they could view Internet Meme to kill time and at the same time, he or she maybe able to learn more about Internet Meme and gets a lot of fun from it.

And finally, based on the poll’s result, no one seems to view Internet Meme to comment on it which is rather strange in some ways. Anyways, what do you think of this result? Share your thoughts with us.

How to create an Internet Meme?

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/createinternetmeme

Ever wonder how these Internet Memes come about? Was it accidental like LOLCats or David After Dentist? Or was it a meme with a purpose like Sudah Potong? Imagine creating a phenomenon so big that EVERYONE is using it. Quite impressive really. Today, we will actually show and guide you how you can create your very own Internet Meme.

First step is find your advantage. What is the one thing you have, whether in yourself or an item that is different or rarely seen by people? Look at other current memes, get inspiration from them if you have to. Other memes is usually accidental, which means it was not done on purpose. Instead, it was done out of curiosity and fun. If you have a pet, you can always find a hidden talent in them and turn it into something humorous. Beside, Internet Meme is all about make fun and be fun. If you have an unusual talent yourself, you can always make that talent into something different.

Second step is be inspired. Think of what internet users like yourself would like to see and laugh out about. Look at normal scenarios and add a twist to it. For example, you saw a grumpy old man in the park and it looks quite ordinary. It will be ordinary if you look at it as a grumpy old man in the park. Imagine having that in a picture and a caption over it which says "No, there's nothing wrong with my face, it's just a smell coming under my nose". With that you have a visual and a funny caption.

Photobucket
Melvin Jones, Pulpit Pimps [Online] Retrieved on 25th February 2010.
URL: http://www.pulpit-pimps.org/?p=1048

Now, spread the word. Post up the picture as your display picture in your blog, chatting sites and other social networking sites where people can view it.

Next, create hype. People won't talk about it if you don't. So, make it sound interesting. Comment on your own picture and have your close friends say something about it. Slowly, other people will start commenting.

Then, evaluate. This is not the final step yet. Read all the comments, was it funny comments? Or was it plain boring comments? If it was boring comments like, "Nice picture" OR "I like your profile picture", then don't bother continuing this meme. But if you receive exciting comments like, "Wow! Where did you get this picture?" OR "LOL! This is really funny how the old man looks" then you have something to talk about. These people are obviously interested with the picture.

As more and more of these similar pictures goes up on the web, people will start noticing it. Human beings are weird in some ways - they follow whatever they believe is cool and current. So, make sure you make them believe it is cool and current. When you manage to do that, you can now step down as the "creator". Soon, you will see other pictures around the internet and you will be wondering who is the person who post up those pictures and maybe, you will say to yourself, "What have I done?"

Follow these steps closely and maybe you will have your very own phenomenon in the 21st century! If it doesn't work, maybe your meme isn't interesting enough.

P.S.: Please note that we do not take any responsibility of injuries or unforeseen circumstances during the process of creating your own meme. This is a post of suggestion only. Try at your own risk.

Weekly Poll Result 5 - Website - The Main Source

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/weeklypoll5

Weekly Poll Chart 5

In this advanced modern technology, Internet is fast becoming a source of finding information for most people as compared to previously, where people will mostly go to a library and search for information from a book or journals. However, people now feels finding information from the Internet is easier and time saving. And after analyzing the previous poll question, the result clearly reflects what is being said.

Sixty two percent of the respondents knew about Internet Meme because they search it from the Internet. Perhaps it is not too surprising to see that because that is where Internet Meme originated from and there is a reason why the word "Internet" is in there. Apart from that, there are certain websites where they publish and talk about Internet Meme. Those Internet Meme can range from the old and classic ones to the latest Internet Meme.

And if you notice the websites that we cited in the references of our posts, you will be able to tell of them is knowyourmeme.com. Internet users can also search for Internet Meme from other websites such as squidoo.com and probably some blogs where the author may comment about it.

Next is Others where it got twenty five percent of the votes. Others here may include family members or probably even your neighbors. Some of our family member may have gotten bored at home or while at work and started searching for random stuff like Internet Meme and introduced them to you.

The remaining thirteen percent of the respondents chose the option "This blog". This shows that the Internet users have never searched for Internet Meme before this and they only realize what Internet Meme is all about when they visit this blog. Maybe the Internet users have seen or heard some kind of topic or issues before this such as the Malaysia's Packet One Wimax Internet Service Provider Meme spreading around the Internet or in daily life before but they just do not know that is called Internet Meme.

Unfortunately, none of the respondents voted for friends and books. We guess people these days have other better topics to talk and discuss about compared to communicating with one another about Internet Meme. As for books, did you guys know that there are books on Internet Meme? Yes? No? Well, we actually got shocked when we first realized it. "Anonymous (Group)" is one of the books which includes information on Internet Meme, Imageboard, Denial- of- Service Attack and among others.

The other one is "I Can Has Cheezburger?". You can probably tell which Internet Meme is that judging from the broken English. Yes! It is about the LolCats. The book consists of the best LolCats pictures collections that was created or taken even since it was "born". You can try also searching for other similar books on LolCats if you want to. If you want to purchase these books, you can try finding it at a bookstore near you or just purchase from the Internet.

So, what do you think of this poll's result? Share your opinion with us as we would like to hear from you.

Podcast: Lady Gaga - The One Of A Kind in Mandarin

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/ladygagapodcast

Hello. This is the third and final podcast and it is about Lady Gaga. So, enjoy.

Podcast Translation

Lady Gaga? It sounds weird and funny. Well, that was probably how most of us reacted when we first heard it and everyone was thinking “Who is that?” or “Lady Gaga, What?”. But when people start to find out more information about this person, watch her performances and her talent in music, they started to react differently and begin to idolize this artist.
(0.01 – 0.16 minutes)

Lady Gaga is actually just a nickname of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta and she was born on 28th March 1986. Lady Gaga started playing piano when she was only four years old and, she written her first balled when she is only 13 years old. In years 2008, her first single “Just Dance” was released and that song propelled her to where she is today.
(00.17 - 00.39)

However, she received mixed feedback from the public. Majority was amazed with her performance and singing talent but at the same time, they felt that her dressing style in music video or performances is very inappropriate for the public to see especially the people living in Asia.
(0.40 - 0.57 minutes)

Despite that, it still did not stop people from following Lady Gaga’s style on the Internet. More and more people started this “Copy” game and dress themselves as Lady Gaga. They take their own picture and post it online. Some even color their hair to become like her, some of them even edit her song and shoot the music video some more. Slowly, this became an Internet Meme.
(0.58 - 1.21 minutes)

This shows that music no longer a form of entertainment that helps to fulfill their ambition but a better way to communicate with one another. Even though those parodied Music Video is rather hilarious and weird, music is always there to link us with everyone. Agree?

Podcast: Cats' Meow in Malay

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/catsmeowpodcast

Greetings. We will continue from the last post with another podcast in Malay and this time, it is about cats. So, check it out.

Podcast Translation

Lolcats? What on earth is that? Well, some of you may have heard or seen this Internet Meme before while some may not.
(0.01 - 0.06 minute)

This Internet Meme or should we say Internet Phenomenon started with a person taking a picture of a cat and puts a funny caption on it and sends it out to their friends.
(0.07 - 0.17 minute)

Then, more and more people encounter these pictures on the Internet. They begin to find the same pictures or similar pictures from all over the Internet and some even take a picture of a cat on their own and put it on MSN and Facebook.
(0.18 - 0.34 minute)

Even till today, you will still find these Lolcats pictures "roaming" around in websites because people still take pictures of cats. But some with better creativity used these cat pictures to create a story out of it. The story may range from their own creativity to movies that you guys watched in the cinema.
(0.35 - 0.53 minute)

Some of the movie fans might get upset when they see the movies that they like like Twilight are being used to create a story and using cats to replace the characters but there is anything to be upset about because it is purely for entertainment and as a joke only.
(0.54 - 1.11 minute)

Also, this Internet Meme can be a stress reliever because if you are feeling stress about your work, it can make you laugh. This is because of the creative and hysterical side brought from Lolcats.
(1.12 - 1.24 minute)

Lastly, credit goes to the person who created the story using cats as creativity is still needed in arranging the picture sequence, choosing the right cats for the characters and even the editing image skills. And let's hope more of these Lolcats come out in 2010 to make us more happy? Agree?

Script

Lee : Did you know, it was Datuk Mahathir who introduced the phrase "Malaysia Boleh"?
(0.01 to 0.04 minute)

Vivienne : Of course! But did you know Malaysia has their very own Internet Meme?
(0.05 to 0.10 minute)

Lee : Internet Meme?
(0.10 to 0.11 minute)

Vivienne : Yup! Internet Meme is an Internet Phenomenon and Malaysia has its very own phenomenon that was started in our very own country.
(0.12 to 0.18 minute)

Lee : Which is?
(0.19 to 0.20 minute)

Vivienne : Sudah Potong?
(0.20 to 0.21 minute)

Lee : Huh?
(0.21 to 0.21 minute)

Vivienne : You know the advertisement by P1 Wimax? They has this campaign called "Sudah Potong" to get customers.
(0.21 to 0.28 minute)

Lee : Oh yeah, i heard of it. But why is it a phenomenon?
(0.29 to 0.32 minute)

Vivienne : Okay, "Sudah Potong" which means "Have you cut already?" in Malay and a lot of people find this ad very funny. They started using "Sudah Potong" every time when someone else refers to cutting something. For example, I ask you whether you want to cut your hair tomorrow and you say...
(0.33 to 0.51 minute)

Lee : Cut? Sudah Potong lah!
(0.52 to 0.53 minute)

Vivienne : Yes correct. That was exactly how people use that phrase. It is an Internet meme because people use that phrase when they are chatting with their friends online. They use it as a tease. Although it is not as popular as other Internet Memes, to some Malaysian it has become a normal thing for them to say. So normal till they use it everyday.
(0.53 to 1.20 minute)

Lee : Really? But Sudah Potong sounds quite offensive in a way, right?
(1.21 to 1.24 minute)

Vivienne : Yeah. There were several issues raised by a few people regarding it. They say it involves sexual innuendo and vulgar and offensive remarks.
(1.25 to 1.34 minute)

Lee : How?
(1.35 to 1.36 minute)

Vivienne : It is actually involves a tradition for young Malay boy to perform a circumcision ceremony and the advertisement's dialogue does contain some sexual elements in it.
(1.37 to 1.48 minute)

Lee : I see.
(1.48 to 1.49 minute)

Vivienne : Maybe some people are sensitive. However, at the end of the day, it qualifies to be an Internet Phenomenon because everyone says it!

Brushie Brushie Brushie

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/brushie3

Have you ever wanted to take a brush and brush someone on the head, hand or anything like that? If you have, then you should give it a try to create some humor around but not literally of course. Why are we talking about that? Well, it is because of the upcoming Internete Meme. The name of this Internet Meme is written in the title - Brushie Brushie Brushie. Sounds cute? Maybe but wait till you see what is coming up.

In January 2008, a Facebook user named Mandi Griffith created a Photo Album called Baby Bats. A photo in particular which has a baby bat named Rubberlegs along with a caption saying "Rubberlegs enjoying a brush with his blue toothbrush" was also added to the Facebook's public group "Bats" that had a huge collection of 95 bat photos!

URL: http://memegenerator.net/856419/Brushie-brushie-brushie

Gross, don't you think? Based on the research that we have done, it is not entirely clear who was the first person to take a photo of the bat. Despite that, this Internet Meme soon developed and it was named Brushie Brushie Brushie mainly because the primary image of picture uses a person's hand holding a brush and brushing a bat in the image. Brushie Brushie Brushie is pretty normal from our point of view because it is similar to Lolcats but as always, the humor caught the attention of Internet users and slowly, they started spreading it around the Internet like a wildfire.

Random images of people, a bat, cartoon characters and even game characters such as Batman, Eve (from Wall-E) and Zelda were taken and the user attaches a hand, a fat hand according to some and a brush to the subject to brush them as if they want to clean some dirt from the face or hand. Besides that, some users decide to insert some funny caption into the image. And just like the Lolcats, some users created a story out of it. It is not that long like the one mentioned in the Cats' Meow post but rather, a very short one. Here is an example of it:

Get it? It is like you doing 'A' and getting 'B' as a result. Pretty straightforward I guess. Anyways, this Internet Meme is pretty normal with nothing much spectacular to remember about even though some of the images can draw out some laughter. But that is just us. What is your opinion or comment about this? Share it with us as we would like to hear from you.

Weekly Poll Result 4 - A Definite Joke

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/weeklypoll4

This week we find out what you think of an Internet Meme and the results are in. Honestly speaking, what do you really think of Internet Meme? A joke? An annoying spam? An informational thing? Or you just don't bother what Internet Meme is?

Photobucket

It seems that majority of you find Internet Meme a joke. To put it in a nicer way, Internet Meme does serve as a form of humour to most people. From spoofs and parodies to just plain crazy, every time a person tunes in to an Internet Meme whether image or video, they just can't help but to grin or laugh out loud. Almost, if not all, Internet Meme does have a funny or humorous element to it. For example, our latest post about Lady Gaga, although she is a very talented and adventurous kind of artist, some people can't help but to make something funny out of it. Can't blame these people really. If it weren't for these people, where can we get free comedy?

Taking second place, some of the voters don't really care or bother much of what Internet Meme is to them. Maybe they just didn't care to think of it much. Some people who sees or receives an image or video of an internet phenomenon, they may just ignore or feel it doesn't serve them much purpose.

The rest of the voters find that Internet Meme is a spam and something informational. Receiving chain mails or junk mails of an Internet Meme may offend some people and they categorized it as a spam. One thing about Internet Meme is that it can sometimes get out of hand. People from all around the world with an internet would send these memes around to their friends and slowly but surely, it will reach millions or billions of people. And these people receives it from different people. So one Internet Meme e-mail have a possibility of being received by a person at least 5 times a day. He or she may just find it as spams.

On the other hand, some people looks at Internet Meme as something informational. They may find it quite fascinating and interesting. It is quite rare to find an Internet Meme that is informational because most of it serves as a joke. Some Internet Meme gives out information such as cultural facts, human personality and so on. So, although it seems like a joke, Internet Meme do contain valuable information that may provide a purpose to people.

A joke? Maybe it just is.

Parent's Vice

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/parentsvice

As promised in the previous weekly poll, we are going to introduce to you one of the most prominent Internet Meme of all time, "David After Dentist". Now what is this Internet Meme all about? Well, it all started with an innocent kid named David DeVore, who was going to have a surgery to remove a tooth.

According to his father, David was rather nervous before the surgery which is very normal considering how young he is and his father decided to videotape him before and after the surgery to calm David down. His father then uploaded the video on Youtube.

booba1234, David After Dentist, Youtube [Online] Retrieved on 6th February 2010.
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txqiwrbYGrs&feature=PlayList&p=B4DE001BAE99BE94&index=0&playnext=1

What happened there? Well, innocent David was given a sedative as a prescribed medication before the appointment. A sedative is a kind of drug that is used to reduce tension and anxiety but David seem to react in a funny way which in return attracted more than 37 million viewers on Youtube as they think it is hilarious and causing it to be the second highest viewed video in 2009 - behind "Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream" performance in Britain's Got Talent.

Just like how a Internet Meme started, others began to release their own version of "David After Dentist" such as the remix version and started to spread it around in the Internet. An even ridiculous version was released which is "Chad After Dentist", featuring the well known Darth Vader from Star Wars.

blamesocietyfilms, Chad After Dentist, Youtube [Online] Retrieved on 6th February 2010.
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGTAnXqn9Jc&feature=player_embedded

After the amazing hits it had on Youtube, "David After Dentist" became so big till people starts to to produce customized T-Shirts which can be found in certain websites today. Some even captured certain parts of the video and attach a funny caption onto it. Just like the Lolcats Internet Meme. All in all, we felt that this Internet Meme is rather feeble and do not have the funny element in the video despite it attracting millions of viewers.

Chris Menning, Jamie Dubs, Greg Leuch, yatta, Brad Kim & peeinears, David After Dentist, Know Your Meme [Online] Retrieved on 6th February 2010.
URL: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/david-after-dentist

Futhermore, there are a lot of criticisms pointed towards David's father as the critics think that his father should be more responsible and protective of this son given that he is still very young and was vulnerable at that time. Funny it maybe but his father should not be thinking that way. If he just videotapes David for this own family entertainment, then it is fine. But to go beyong that and upload the video on Youtube? Parents sure have some "good" sense of humour these days.

So, do you think it is right for parents to upload videos of their kid particularly if they are still very young and needs their parents care like David? Or do you think it is fine considering how the society's mentality or perception have changed in recent years? Share your comment and opinion with us.

Malaysian Style

Malaysia Boleh!

So many Internet Memes around and yet there is none from our homeland, Malaysia. So what is Malaysia's internet phenomenon? Or is there any?

Here is one Meme that qualifies to be an Internet Phenomenon - at least in Malaysia. This Internet Meme is called, "Sudah Potong?" and it was made famous by Packet One Wimax Internet Service Provider. Sudah Potong is a Malay phrase which means, Have you cut already? It started out as an advertisement and their goal is to gain customers from their campaign but turns out, people find it hilarious and started using that phrase - Sudah Potong?

Photobucket
Advertising war! in Malaysia!, Customer Service & Marketing in Malaysia Wordpress [Image Online], Retrieved 6 February 2010.

P1wimax, Sudah Potong? Radio Ad [English Version], YouTube [Online], Retrieved 6 February 2010.
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I_e2jkUTZ8

Why is this an Internet Meme? Besides the fact that everyone used that phrase every now and then, people on the Internet tease each other with that phrase.

Here's one example of a scenario on MSN:-
(Please be warned that the following conversation is Manglish [Malay-English], do excuse us for our English proposition here)

Person A: I want to cut my hair tomorrow. Wanna join me?
Person B: Cut? Cut for what lah... Jangan potong!

That is one example how people use this "Sudah Potong" phrase on their normal basis while chatting with their friends. Although this may not be as popular as other Internet Memes, to some Malaysian, it has become a normal thing for them to say. In other words, so normal, it became a culture among Malaysians.

However, it raised some sexist issue regarding these advertisements by P1 Wimax and the effect on people. In the Malay culture, it is a tradition for a Malay boy from the age of seven to twelve to perform a circumcision ceremony and it is usually done by someone from the boy's village that specializes in performing circumcision ceremonies.

But in cities, it can be done at hospitals. In the female perspective and society, they found it offensive because it was somewhat describing the male-circumcision-ceremony.

According to the Star Online, the Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall Wanita chief, Alice Lee said, "It was done in very bad taste and is filled with sexual innuendo". And another blogger said, "It is vulgar and its suggestive remarks set a trap for the audience to make the negative association.

So, what do you think about this issue? Did P1 Wimax just dug their own grave or it does not really matter since P1 Wimax goal wasn't to raise sensitive issue but to create a commercial?

However, at the end of the day, some Malaysian just use that phrase for the fun of it, not really to insult, right?

Weekly Poll Result 3 - Likeable Animal Meme

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/weeklypoll3

Weekly Poll Chart 3

In life, everybody has their own personality and preference. For the example, some people may like to eat durian but others may not due to the strong smell. So in last week's poll, we asked you about your preferences on the category of Internet Meme. The results are in and it is quite interesting.

Animal Meme received the highest number of vote as fifty percent of the respondents chose that option. Perhaps it is no that surprisingly that it got the highest because of the animal's characteristic. Animal tends to be very innocent and has that cute personality in them that always catches the attention of most human being. That is why some of us buy pets that are like that such as cat, hamster or rabbit.

Despite anime being a popular form of entertainment in the world, it did not dominate the poll as the Anime Meme only got twenty percent of the votes. The ability to create an animation is very attractive for teenagers and some adult as it can create out something that we do not usually see or happen in reality. From a 2-Dimensional animation like the classic cartoon series - Tom and Jerry to the more accomplished 3-Dimensional animation such as the Avatar movie, animation is always improving and fascinates all of us with the brilliant animation techniques.

Next is the Various Internet Meme where it shares the same amount of votes as the Anime Meme - twenty percent. Various Internet Meme is where people use different living things to present the Internet Meme. Example? Just look at our "Om Nom Nom Nom - Let's Eat Together" post. In that meme, the person is trying to use their imagination to take all sorts of picture that portrays different ways of eating like a cat eating a cactus or a machine eating a human when it is actually having a body checking.

The remaining ten percent of the respondents voted for the "Others" option. Others here could be Internet Meme that involves human beings doing funny or odd things like the "David After Dentist" Meme. Never heard of it? Do not worry, it will be coming soon. Lastly, Technology Meme did not receive any vote which is rather sad considering how advanced Technology is today.

So, it seems that most people chose Animal Meme as their favorite. What do you think of results? Other category should have more votes? Well, share your opinion here.

Weekly Poll Result 2 - Image/Video Dominated

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/weeklypoll2

Photobucket

When you are watching television/video or looking at an image, what catches your attention most? The image, video, the caption or sub titles? Most likely it will be the image or video because human beings tend to pay more attention to graphics than text. And that was reflected in the result of our last week's poll where we asked the respondents - "What do you like about an Internet Meme?".

The result shows that fifty-eight percent of the respondents preferred the image or video more in an Internet Meme. This could be due to the fact that they have seen or came across hilarious or funny images or videos recently. And we are pretty sure that some of the Internet Meme like the Oolong the Rabbit or Om Nom Nom Nom have played a part in this result.

Unfortunately, most of the respondents disliked Internet Meme as twenty one percent of them chose that option. Judging from that result, it shows that they perhaps have no interests in Internet Meme or they could have gone through the Internet Meme but none of it "succeeded" in attracting the voters.

The next result is a little more encouraging as fourteen percent of the respondents like the caption in an Internet Meme. When someone likes the caption more than the images or videos, it could be because the words phrasing are hilarious or maybe the caption is just too catchy for the voters to avoid laughing at it.

Finally, the remaining seven percent of the respondents chose the option "Both". In other words, they like both the images or videos and caption. A great combination of a funny image or video with a good caption will certainly catch the attention of Internet users and make them laugh all the way. The Lolcats Internet Meme is a good example of this.

In the end, we can conclude that most of the respondents like Internet Meme particularly the image or video but what about those that dislike Internet Meme? We would you like to hear your opinion on this. And what do you think of this week's poll result? Do share your opinion with us.

Babies Got Some Skills

Link to Us: http://snipr.com/babiesskills

We all heard of the phrase, "Dance like there's no tomorrow". That phrase was used backed in the 80s where disco was the so-called in-thing. Till today, people are still using this phrase to describe almost anything. For example, "Eat like there's no tomorrow" or "Laugh like there's no tomorrow". The next internet meme, like the phrase itself, was an old hit that regained its fame in the new century. The Dancing Baby or also known as Baby Cha Cha was an internet phenomenon back in the 90s. It is an animated 3D baby, wearing only white diapers, dancing and also break-dancing.

Like other internet meme, Dancing Baby became a popular short video with the help of e-mail chains. Some people find it offensive while some find it hilarious. It even made a television debut on "Ally McBeal" as part of Ally's hallucination.

Forward to 2010, after more than a decade, Dancing Baby is back and this time, it is not in 3D but instead, real-life. However, this time, Dancing Baby is not spread through e-mails; it is spread through YouTube videos.

Beyonce's famous hit song, Single Ladies topped charts across the world but these babies took over the YouTube charts instead. What the babies were doing was dancing to the song Single Ladies and somehow, their parents' video recorded them. From a funny home video to an internet phenomenon, parents after parents posted up videos of their child dancing to Beyonce's Single Ladies. It has now become like a competition. YouTube users would comment on the video whether critisizing or praising. The baby would actually try to mimic the exact dance moves from the original Single Ladies music video. It sounds quite adorable and to actually watch the baby dancing is very hilarious. We guess that is one way to gain fame at an early age.

Approximately 4,000 videos were uploaded on YouTube, almost all featuring a baby and Single Ladies song. If you were to search "Baby dancing to Beyonce", you may see videos of grown men doing the same thing as the babies - white diapers and Single Ladies being played in the background. It may be something like a parody of this internet meme. Imagine an ordinary home video, becoming so famous that people actually feel worth making a parody out of it?

Is it a natural talent by the young infants? Or was it a fake where the parents taught them in advance? And is it even an ethical thing for the kids to watch a leotard-dressed female dancing?
